Morgan Stanley’s Operational Risk Department (ORD) is looking to hire one (1) full-time Associate based in Shanghai, China. This role will support the Firm’s Operational Mapping Program which in turn is leveraged for a number of Regulatory Reporting and BAU requirements within Business Units and Support and Control Functions throughout the Firm.

The Operational Mapping team within ORD is managed from New York and reports to the Global Head of Operational Risk. Operational Mapping provides a detailed inventory of the non-financial resources (e.g., services, applications, vendors) required by the Firm’s Critical Operations, Core Business Lines and Material Entities, including which of those resources is critical in resolution. Through this effort, the Firm:

• Understands its operational interconnectedness;

• Reports on the flow of services between legal entities, business lines and support divisions;

• Differentiates between critical and non-critical services;

• Documents which applications and external vendors are required to support each service for each legal entity;

• Confirms that all critical support resources are under the control of the MSE network; and

• Provides certain evidence to the Legal Entity Rationalization effort, etc.

The primary function of this role is to facilitate compliance with the ongoing Operational Mapping requirements and to aid in the establishment of appropriate 2nd line of defense activities in association with various operational risks. Within the department and globally, the role collaborates with team members mainly within ORD and support service units. This individual’s responsibilities would, at a minimum, include a combination of the following activities relating to the ongoing maintenance of the Operational Mapping / SWORD Database:

- Facilitate and coordinate the due diligence review process consisting of the following:

• Identifying changes and impact based due to Organization, Legal Entity, Service / Process / Vendor / Application Triggers

• Work with various stakeholders to identify the specific changes and facilitate the updates required within the Firm's systems

• Work with the entitlement team to make entitlement changes

• Log changes in application and corresponding criticality within SWORD as a part of the Application and Vendor trigger process

- Manage Reporting / Perform Analysis:

• Develop / Facilitate reporting of Operational Mapping data to satisfy ongoing regulatory reporting and on an ad hoc basis

• Assist with ad hoc analyses relating to data reconciliation efforts supporting the integration efforts from various sources into SWORD




• Minimum 3 years of working experience in international financial institutions or consulting firms

• Bachelor’s degree required; economics, finance, business or another analytical discipline preferred. Master’s degree is a plus

• Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written

• Cross-discipline and geographical stakeholder management with commensurate experience

• Logical thinking, ability to analyze complex sets of data and convert to meaningful risk reporting

• Detailed oriented

• Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio

• Ability to manage multiple contingent assignments

• Ability to efficiently “navigate the Firm” to solicit responses to regulatory or business requirements

• Ability to prioritize work and flex accordingly

• Self-motivated with an ability to work independently and think creatively

• Ability to present to and interact with senior management when needed
