Key Purpose of the role:

Evaluate the casualty risks of existing and prospective clients, with a particular focus on Life Sciences and Chemicals (and if needed other segments within casualty appetite), and translate technical findings into clear, objective and actionable insights that support risk selection and underwriting decisions.

Act as the technical link between the European Casualty Underwriting Team and clients' subject-matter experts. Through desk-based assessments, and on-site surveys (where appropriate), develop a structured understanding of each risk, including where information is limited, and assess the quality and effectiveness of the client's risk management and mitigation measures.

Provide informed technical challenges and advice to Underwriters and contribute specialist expertise to portfolio development, new business opportunities and product initiatives.

About the Department & Team:

This new role will be integrated within the European Casualty Underwriting Team reporting to the European Casualty Director based in Paris. There is 40 Underwriters/ Managers across Europe and 1 Risk Engineer based in Cologne, looking after a Casualty book of about USD 200m. The team exchanges regularly with Risk Engineers from other lines of business such as Energy, and with the Risk Engineering Team in other regions, in particular US and APAC.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan, organise and conduct desk-based technical risk assessments for the Casualty Underwriting Team. Review and analyse the available risk information, identify material information gaps and use targeted technical questions to develop a clear and objective view of the risk.
• Assessments will be tailored to the client's industry and risk profile and will typically cover the client's operations, products and services and their associated casualty exposures, quality and risk management systems, relevant loss and claims history, and the adequacy and effectiveness of risk mitigation measures. The findings will be translated into clear technical insights and recommendations to support risk selection and underwriting decisions using the available tools.
• Conduct on-site risk engineering surveys for existing and prospective clients, as required by Underwriters.
• Utilise online survey systems and offline templates to produce summary and detailed marketing risk engineering survey reports for Underwriters, Brokers, or the Client as required. The role will be based in the Paris office with working from home options, with travelling where necessary (predominantly within continental Europe: France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and the Nordics) to meet Liberty insureds.
• Provide technical input to assist in the development of new products and new business initiatives.
• Maintain professional credibility and consistently demonstrate technical expertise and sound judgment.
• Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the assigned lines of business(es) including process technology, loss prevention, construction and other related issues that may impact the underwriting decision-making process or profitability. The job holder is expected to actively pursue professional development in order to develop and maintain knowledge in these areas.
• Assist in the ongoing development of the risk engineering proposition for policyholders. This includes developing materials for Liberty Risk Reduce, updating Guidance Documents and working with the team to develop new format materials to benefit both Liberty clients and Underwriters, e.g. video and eLearning materials.
• Monitor progress with risk improvements.
• Deliver technical presentations to assist with internal and external seminars.

Skills and Experience:

• Thorough understanding of class specific knowledge in Life Science / Chemical Risk
• Extensive experience in Casualty Risk Engineering
• Knowledge of industry legal and regulatory requirements
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong analytical skills
• Strong organisational and prioritisation skills
• Ability to analyse and use data for decision making
• Strong attention to detail
• Bachelor, Master or doctoral degree, or an equivalent qualification, in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Biotechnology or another relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
• Fluent French and English language competence
