Job Description

The Chief Actuary leads the actuarial function across Asia Pacific and MENA, providing strategic oversight of reserving, pricing, planning, technical provisions, solvency, capital modelling and portfolio performance. The Chief Actuary will sit as a member of the Canopius APAC Executive Committee, partners closely with regional leadership, underwriting teams, the Group Chief Actuary and senior management to deliver actuarial insight that supports profitable growth, robust governance, effective risk management and sound strategic decision-making.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop the regional actuarial team, ensuring high-quality analysis, reporting and recommendations.
  • Oversee reserving, technical provisions, capital modelling, solvency assessments and actuarial governance across the region and reporting to the Group Reserving Management Committee as required.
  • Provide pricing, profitability and portfolio performance insights to support underwriting strategy, business planning and Quarterly Business Review ('QBR') processes.
  • Consider the impact of emerging risks on reserving and business planning.
  • Partner with underwriting, finance, risk, claims and senior leadership to inform strategic and commercial decisions.
  • Drive greater use of data, analytics and actuarial insight to improve risk selection, performance monitoring and business outcomes.
  • Ensure actuarial work is aligned with Group standards, regulatory requirements and regional governance expectations.
  • Support internal model, pricing, reserving and other actuarial projects as required.
  • Build strong relationships across APAC, MENA and Group functions, including London-based stakeholders.
  • Liaise with Lloyd's, Singapore/Austalia regulators/rating agencies as necessary to demonstrate the quality of Actuarial analysis in line with the local regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a high-performance actuarial culture focused on technical excellence, innovation and commercial impact.

And other ad hoc duties as required.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience
  • Accredited Degree and a qualified actuary.
  • 10+ years of actuarial experience within general insurance and/or reinsurance, including substantial experience in the Asia Pacific market.
  • Demonstrated expertise across a broad range of insurance and reinsurance business structures
  • Prior experience essential in: Pricing, Reserving, Business planning
  • Proven experience leading, mentoring and developing actuarial professionals.
  • Experience engaging with senior underwriting and executive stakeholders and influencing strategic business decisions.
  • Good grasp of portfolio management, accumulation control and compliance as defined by the Group
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance technical rigour and business objectives.
  • Flexible and a self-motivator with appetite to face new challenges.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to explain complex ideas to a variety of audiences
