Job Description



As a Senior Manager in Credit Risk Oversight you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of credit quality across all of Nationwides Lending portfolios.



You will also act as the Business Credit Risk oversight partner, you and your team will also be required to be the subject matter experts for all matters related to the Business portfolios across the Credit Management Lifecycle.



You will manage a team of credit risk experts to oversee the setting of Credit Risk Strategy, ensuring alignment with Nationwide strategic direction and ensuring credit risk is being managed in line with Risk Appetite. You will ensure credit risk strategies deliver the desired balance between caution, in order to protect our members money, whilst delivering the necessary economic returns to further our financial strength.



You will oversee the setting of credit policy, providing an independent opinion on proposals in Group Credit Committee and at MRT levels to ensure a full understanding of end to end credit risk management.



Your team of credit experts will be responsible for undertaking regular deepdives on credit policy and mitigants, ensuring these are appropriate to, and effective in managing, the risks identified, any new risks emerging as well as the opportunities and balance of risk and reward



You will oversee the assessment of IFRS9 provisions, ensuring carrying provisions are adequate and capture Nationwide's exposure to present and future upcoming risks. This will include ensuring sensible forecast of provisions and risk profile are included in financial forecasts, both for Financial Planning and stress testing purposes.



This is a high profile role, your span of influence will involve providing second line opinion for Group Credit Committee, Credit Risk Management Forums and deputising for the Head of Credit Risk Oversight as required



As an experienced credit risk professional, with a working knowledge of all facets of credit risk management, you will be a member of Credit Model Technical Forums, ensuring model approvals are considerate of the operating and risk environment in which they are used.

Responsibilities




What you'll be doing



This role sits at the heart of the Credit Risk agenda, with a broad and varied remit. In addition to acting as the Business Credit Risk oversight partner, you will lead work across portfolios and domains to provide a consolidated group view across key areas such as Risk Appetite, Financial Planning, and Risk Measurement. You will leverage your expertise to oversee the setting of Credit Risk Strategy, ensuring alignment with the Group's strategic ambitions and that key risks are appropriately identified and mitigated. You will also oversee the definition and adherence to both Board and Management Risk Appetite frameworks.



You will provide independent, informed opinions on credit proposals submitted to the Group Credit Committee, and engage with MRT proposals, ensuring these are supported by robust analysis and aligned to overall strategy. Your role will also involve active engagement in credit model development to ensure models are fit for purpose, with any limitations clearly understood and mitigated. In addition, you will lead regular deep dives into credit policy and strategy to ensure consistency across asset classes and effectiveness in managing emerging and evolving risks.



You will oversee the measurement and reporting of credit risk, ensuring accurate and transparent reporting through governance forums up to Board level. This includes responsibility for overseeing credit provisions, ensuring they adequately reflect risk exposure, with any model weaknesses understood and appropriate adjustments made. You will contribute to provisions forums and provide input into recommendations to the Chief Financial Officer on IFRS 9 adequacy, economic scenarios, and weightings.



Alongside this, you will oversee financial loss forecasting across planning and stress testing, ensuring forecasts appropriately capture economic and geopolitical risks, and that models are robust, with limitations clearly identified and mitigated through your involvement in Credit Model Technical Forums.




About you



You will have:





  • Proven experience in the management and oversight of Business credit portfolios, including policy, strategy, risk management, measurement, and financial drivers





  • Experience across other portfolios such as Secured and Unsecured credit is advantageous





  • Proven experience leading and managing credit risk teams, with an inclusive leadership style





  • Proven track record of identifying key risks, opportunities, and challenges, and delivering solutions with strong senior stakeholder buy-in





  • Established credibility as an Business credit risk subject matter expert





  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to ensure second line opinions are clearly understood, respected, and acted upon





  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to identify, engage, and maintain effective relationships





  • Exceptional analytical capability, with the ability to simplify and communicate complex concepts clearly to senior audiences





  • Ability to connect commercial, operational, technological, and credit risk considerations into clear, actionable insights
