Standard Chartered veteran returns to the bank in top Singapore job
Hussain Thameezdeen, who left a senior engineering role at Standard Chartered in 2015, has returned to the firm in Singapore as head of data quality and data analytics for retail banking, private banking and wealth management.
Thameezdeen held two leadership positions in between leaving and rejoining Stan Chart, according to his LinkedIn profile. He was head of operations at Qatar First Bank in Doha from 2015 2018, and then spent about 14 months as an executive director and head of operations change management at Bank of Singapore.
During his first stint at Stan Chart, which lasted 13 years, Thameezdeen was most recently head of product engineering for direct and sub-custody securities services within global operations.
In his new Stan Chart role, Thameezdeen finds himself working in one of the hottest job functions in the Singapore banking sector: data analytics. Last month, a Singapore government framework placed data analytics in the top-five skills for achieving future career success in the local finance sector.
Banks in Singapore – led by the likes of Stan Chart, Citi, DBS, OCBC and UOB – are competing with Google, Amazon, Facebook and other tech firms to hire people into data analytics jobs. This is triggering talent shortages in the function, say recruiters. Data-focused jobs are in demand more broadly, too. As we reported last month, for example, Thameezdeen’s former employer, Bank of Singapore, has hired senior data scientist Nikolay Novozhilov into its innovation unit.
Thameezdeen began his finance-sector career as an assistant manager for operations at GE Capital in 1999. He moved to Stan Chart for the first time in 2002, and by 2004 he was working as a senior manager in securities services global operations, managing a large team.
