DBS appoints head of data and analytics technology

DBS has re-hired Petri Tuomola as its head of data and analytics technology. Tuomola was with DBS from 2014 to 2016 as an executive director leading its core banking technology organisation, responsible for delivery of all change programmes, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He then relocated to Helsinki and worked for Finnish bank Nordea, latterly as deputy head of core banking transformation.

Tuomola’s new role at DBS is a significant step up. He’s been promoted to managing director and is in charge of one of the firm’s most important tech teams. Like other banks, DBS has put data and analytics at the heart of its business agenda in order to personalise products and services for corporate and retail clients. Since the start of 2020 DBS has rolled out “intelligent banking” capabilities that analyse the firm’s vast troves of customer data and use predictive analytics to provide insights and recommendations that make it easier for customers to manage their investments.

DBS is not the only financial institution in Asia to appoint people into senior data roles recently. As we reported earlier this month, Citi hired Sarah Garvey from Deutsche Bank as its Singapore-based COO for data and analytics, APAC and EMEA. In August, HSBC took on Annette Neeson from Commonwealth Bank as chief data officer for Hong Kong. Last month, Cristal Hui, HSBC’s chief data officer for APAC global banking and markets, joined AIA as head of data governance and analytics for Hong Kong and Macau.

Data professionals in Hong Kong and Singapore who are “technically strong yet have the ability to hire and manage a team remain in constant demand by financial institutions and tech firms alike”, Don Zhao, associate director of technology at Space Executive, told us earlier this year. “Now that data and algorithms continue to drive banks’ strategies in areas like automation and detecting fraudulent activities, there will be continued growth and demand for this skill set,” he added.

Tuomola started his career at Accenture in 2000 and worked as an IT consultant, project manager, and architect in the UK and France. He joined Deutsche Bank in 2006 and worked across several senior roles, most recently as a director and head of core banking and billing for global technology.

Meanwhile, in another significant hire by DBS, Brina Nash has joined the Singapore bank from Goldman Sachs as head of marketing technology products. Nash was previously head of customer relationship management at GS in New York.
