Jane Street's London tax architect has shown up at a new trading firm

DRW, the Chicago-based trading firm that's hiring in Asia, is also hiring in London. It's not just adding traders, though. It also wants someone to help it reduce the amount of tax it pays.

The firm hired Christopher Read as its new tax director, based in London. Read previously spent nine years at Jane Street, where he built Jane Street’s UK tax department from the ground up and contributed to creating the firm’s tax team in Asia.

DRW's main London entity, DRW Investments (UK) Limited, paid £131m ($171m) in tax last year. Jane Street, by comparison, paid $89m in Read's last full year of service at the firm, 2023.

Read’s appointment in London is part of its broader growth in the city. Headcount at DRW UK Partners LLP, its primary employing UK subsidiary, increased from 244 to 322 – a 32% upswing – and its wage bill went up by 57% in the same year. And the growth doesn’t seem to have slowed down in 2025: it's already added BNP Paribas equities MD Deepak Sran, as well as James Elford, CTO of crypto hedge fund Numerai, both in London.
