I am a financial services recruiter. This is a job I have done for many years. In the current market, it is harder than ever. Almost no one is getting recruited.

This is how things work now:

A role is posted and hundreds of people apply. There is a hiring manager who usually has no idea who all these applicants are. 

The applicants go through multiple layers of filtering: ATS filters, internal screening criteria, the generic internal acquisition team. At some point in this process they are rejected. Often they will be automatically rejected soon after applying.

I speak all the time to candidates who are applying for jobs they are appropriate for but are hearing nothing back. I also speak to hiring managers who say they can't find the right people.

Something is clearly going wrong. 

In my opinion it's both the filtering and the internal acquisition teams. The hiring process has been so heavily automated and commoditised that the expertise for identifying strong candidates has disappeared. Hundreds of candidates are filtered out, but they include the people the business needs. 

This isn't a criticism of internal talent acquisition teams. I understand that they are under pressure and are dealing with high volumes and systems they didn't design. But something is wrong. It's systematic. From where I sit, a huge amount of talent is being overlooked.

    I keep seeing job postings that, if taken literally, I'm clearly qualified for, being reposted for months at a time. The headhunters can't work out what they really want, I can't work out what they really want, and if you manage to get to talk to an internal hiring manager, they clearly haven't been properly briefed on what the team requires. Recruitment is a skilled profession, not a filtering exercise.

    Completely agree! I’m seeing it firsthand in KYC/AML, qualified candidates are being filtered out early while teams are still searching.
